SDUHSD serves students from five elementary school districts in North County: Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, Cardiff, Solana Beach, and Del Mar. Students from those districts matriculate through our middle schools and high schools, with the exception of those from the Rancho Santa Fe School District, who begin here as freshmen.
Booming population growth and demographic diversity have characterized the North County and SDUHSD in the past 15 years. Families from all parts of the world are attracted to our inviting climate and exceptional learning institutions, enriching our schools with a wide variety of languages and cultural backgrounds. From surfers to scientists, from beach cottages to high tech towers, this district represents a broad range on the socio-economic spectrum.
Many parents are employed at such neighboring institutions as the University of California, San Diego, the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation, nearby biotechnology firms in Sorrento Valley, and high tech giants like Qualcomm, all of which influence the high standards of education and expectation at San Dieguito.
THE FRIENDS OF SOLANA BEACH LIBRARY
Friends of the Solana Beach Library is a member-supported, nonprofit organization that fundraises, advocates and works with partners and volunteers to provide critical support.
SOLANA BEACH BRANCH OF THE SAN DIEGO COUNTY LIBRARY
In June 1925, Ira Earl Conner opened the first Solana Beach County library in his grocery store. For twenty and a half years the library remained in his store until he sold the store in January 1946. It was located about 100 feet south of Plaza St. on Highway 101, the building is still in use.
The library was moved to the Colony Shop on Highway 101 for about one year and then to a variety store, where it was located until September 1948. From early County Library correspondence, it appears to have moved into the Jack and Jill Shop, presumable on Highway 101, but was only there until July 1949, when the owner of the store asked that the library be removed. It reopened in June 1950 at the Weaving Studio of Mrs. May Shelton St. John. She sold the store in July 1952. There was difficulty finding a place for the library. None of the businesses would take it. Finally Mrs. Joseph C. Scialdo took it into her home at the north end of Solana Beach in August 1952, where it remained for almost a year.
At this time various groups were trying to obtain a more permanent location in Solana Beach. They wrote to the County library and the County Supervisors. Finally through the efforts of the Solana Beach Women’s Civic Club and the County librarian, a lease was obtained at 145 S. Highway 101. The library was a little over 1,000 sq. ft. and opened in October 1953.
Due to increased circulation the library became inadequate. A group of citizens formed an ad hoc committee to ask for a new , larger building. A new building, with several places for small shops, was built at 155 S. Highway 101. The library moved into one shop area in August 1968. During the first month there were no shelves, the books were in boxes in the center of the library and they had a circulation of 1,200 books that first month. As the population in Solana Beach increased, the circulation increased and the library became inadequate. The adjoining shop became available and the library expanded into this area for the children’s collection.
In March 1983 the Friends of the Solana Beach library was formed. They became very active in trying to increase the library size and to find a new location. New space was found in the Lomas Santa Fe Shopping center, Garden Section, Plaza of the Four Flags, at 381F Lomas Santa Fe Dr. The library moved into 3,800 square feet of space in October 1983.
In 1995 the Solana Beach City Council appointed Council members Joe Kellejian and Marion Dodson as a sub committee to work toward a new for Solana Beach Library. Many meetings were held organizing the community towards this goal and working on the funding. Funding was obtained from the State of California, City of Solana Beach, County of San Diego, San Dieguito Union High School District, and Friends of the Solana Beach Library. In June 2000 a contract was awarded for a 10,500 square feet library, located at Earl Warren Middle School, 157 Stevens Ave, Solana Beach. It is a shared-use library between the San Diego County Library and the San Dieguito Union High School District. The library was dedicated June 22, 2001 and opened its doors for use July 5,2001.

The neighborhood of La Colonia (AKA Eden Gardens) is one of the oldest residential areas in Solana Beach. It was formed in the 1920’s by Mexican farmers who were hired to work in nearby lima bean fields or on the large ranches in Rancho Santa Fe. These farmers wanted their families nearby, hence the formation of La Colonia. The name Eden Gardens came later from a land developer who thought it would be a good marketing tool.
In 2011 community members formed the La Colonia de Eden Gardens with the intention of empowering the community youth in furthering their lives in a positive manner and improving resources available to all residents. Drawing from local resources, such as the San Dieguito Boys and Girls Club, the foundation has been able to make positive youth activities increasingly available.
One of the most amazing projects currently being worked on is the Community Garden. Board member Pat Caughey, President and Principal of Wimmer Yamada and Caughey (WYAC), is heading its development.

(Del Mar, CA July 29, 2019) The only solely children’s bookstore in the region opened up for business in Del Mar this month. It is located at 1414 Camino del Mar, Del Mar, CA 92014, in the heart of the shopping area and restaurants. Sandcastle Tales is just a few hundred steps from the beach.
The Rhett family has been in Del Mar for over fifty years. Alex Rhett, the founder and owner of Sandcastle Tales, draws upon her experience in International Relations, traveling, and teaching to inform the book selection and activities at the bookstore.
“The kids in our community are passionate about nature, animals and the environment. They are outside surfing, hiking, horseback riding, and exploring. That’s the kind of community we serve. Sandcastle Tales is the place where families can begin their journey of exploration. We have books on nature, animals, ocean, art, environment, and so much more. The kids here love to be outdoors and then grab a book and read to continue their adventures in their minds,” says Rhett.
“Our community bookstore encourages reading. I tell my kids: ‘When you read you get to go places and discover new worlds. You get to hear others’ thoughts and live their experiences,’“ continues Rhett.
When Alex Rhett was recently in Pittsburgh, PA. at the national children’s book conference sharing news of Sandcastle Tales, all of the other attendees who already were bookstore owners were agreeing that Alex’s innovative ideas are worthwhile for kids. “It is encouraging to confirm with other booksellers that what we are doing in Sandcastle Tales is special,” says Rhett.
“Books have come a long way, but still the basics are that you can touch and hold them. Some books add a button that offers music as part of the story. There are books that teach you values. But what makes a book special is how it makes you feel when you read it or hear it read to you,” says Rhett.
“We have a wonderful inventory of curated books for children, including classic books that evoke nostalgia for adults. The books that grandparents read to parents, and now parents read to their children. The Bible is my favorite book; I also enjoy reading adventures and environmentalist stories to my kids” added Rhett.
“This is my family business and it is my passion. Our wonderful library and Sandcastle Tales are all working hard to offer valuable resources to families in our community. I have reached out to the library and the Friends of the Del Mar Library to offer to partner with them to serve our community, and Sandcastle Tales will be donating books and more to the library. I have many business ideas, but to me, opening a children’s bookstore is one of the best ways I can give back to my community, and express my deep love and care for families.”
In addition to books, Sandcastle Tales offers multilingual story times, sand art, crafts, interactive sand play, toys, tasty frozen treats and candies, gifts and souvenirs; Spanish language lessons and other tutoring services are available by appointment. The bookstore hours are M-Sat from 10 to 5 pm, and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm. All current activities are posted on social media.
This is an extraordinary school with incredible teachers, a challenging curriculum, outstanding athletics and exciting missions opportunities. Our rigorous academic curriculum is taught through a Biblical worldview in a rich, nurturing community of teachers, coaches, mentors and peers all passionate about serving Christ. This is a place where you are comfortable enough to try something different and supported enough to get better at something you love. We are dedicated to expanding minds, building faith — and preparing you for the journey of lifetime.
Every day, we watch our students grow from beginner musicians to confident and inspiring rock stars in their community. Browse photos, videos, posts and more to find out why School of Rock Del Mar is more than just your local music school.
An idea created by Shawn McClondon and supported by residents from Solana Beach 4 Equality, Encinitas 4 Equality and Del Mar pushing for greater diversity and racial equity in San Diego County and beyond.
Currently, we have designated the following two Sister Cities Partnerships as prototypes with greater expansion to follow.
- Southeast San Diego and Solana Beach
- City Heights
“The Sister City Program” was born to partner affluent communities with underserved communities in San Diego County for the following purposes:
- Provide opportunities for city officials and citizens to experience and explore other cultures through long-term community partnerships.
- Create an atmosphere in which economic and community development can be implemented and strengthened.
- Stimulate environments through which communities will creatively learn, work, and solve problems together through reciprocal cultural, educational, municipal, business, professional and technical exchanges and projects.
- Collaborate with organizations in communities that share similar goals.
The practical execution of the Sister Cities partnerships would be to create programs and events that allow the two areas to collaborate and share resources in an effort to forge relationships and provide opportunities for mostly white and/or affluent communities to support black businesses, black youth, black history, black organizations and black arts. And although Sister Cities Project does not exclude the participation of men in our programs, we are focused on prioritizing black women.
Our areas of impact consist of:
- Cultural Events (General Events, Cultural Tours and Networking Events)
- Business Growth (Mentorships, Resources, Tools & Education)
- Workforce Development (Youth Internships, SMB support)
This will be a permanent partnership. Given the current climate in America, we believe that this is the first and most important step toward understanding one another and using that understanding to create the changes that are needed for true racial justice in America.
Welcome to Skyline School, Home of the Waves! We are a unique school housing two outstanding educational programs, our 4th-6th grade program and our Global Education K-6 program.
Skyline is the recipient of the 2012 California Distinguished School Award. This recognition was achieved through the hard work of our students, committed and dedicated teachers and staff, and our active and involved parents.
Our Parent Teacher Association and the Solana Beach Schools Foundation provide substantial financial and volunteer support to our school, supporting specialized programs, technology, science, art, music and physical education.
The Solana Beach Civic and Historical Society evolved from the well established Solana Beach Women’s Civic Club that was formed in 1953. In March 1989 the Solana Beach City Council asked the Women’s Civic Club to become custodians of the City’s hisory. Accordingly, the Civic Club’s Certificate of Incorporation was modified to create the Solana Beach Civic and Historical Society. Membership is open to all adults in the community. The focus is on civic and cultural advancement, charitable giving, education of the public by the Historical Society and the Heritage Museum, and other appropriate activities.
Since 1964, our philosophy is to help children grow in a positive way in their awareness of God, themselves, and the world around them. We believe in developmentally appropriate play and hands-on activities as the best path to learning. Our staff consists of skilled, experienced early childhood educators that strive to incorporate new ideas, teaching methods, and materials into our program.
Our preschool program aims for an equal balance of freedom and structure. Young children need time to explore, socialize, experiment, play and rest. They need to develop basic physical, emotional and intellectual skills, to learn to listen, follow instructions, and to develop readiness for the transition into kindergarten.
Indoor Activities are designed to enhance fine motor skills with art and craft projects, color and shape recognition, seasonal theme projects, reading readiness, math and number concept projects, puzzles, games, dramatic play, and free time.
Outdoor Activities include climbing, sliding, playing ball, digging, scooping, measuring in the sandbox, water play, gardening and more.
Language & Music learning is emphasized through rhymes, singing, rhythm band, small group storytime, and flannel boards.
Spiritual Program through monthly virtues and “The Beginning Bible” lessons. We attend chapel the first Tuesday and Wednesday of every Month.
Monthly tuition is based on the morning program, which is 8:30 to 12:00. Extended hours are 8:00-8:30 am and 12:00 to 3:00 pm.

Founded in 1925, the District serves communities in the City of Solana Beach, Carmel Valley, Fairbanks Ranch, and Rancho Santa Fe. The District has a long-standing tradition of academic success coupled with innovative, experiential learning opportunities designed to maximize learning for each student.
The District has seven elementary schools and a Child Development Center with programs for toddler, preschool, before and after school support and services. The elementary schools are: Solana Vista (K-3); Skyline (4-6 and the K-6 Global Education Program); Solana Santa Fe (K-6); Carmel Creek (K-3); Solana Highlands (K-3); Solana Pacific (4-6); and, Solana Ranch (K-6).
The Solana Beach School District is proud of our students, appreciative of our families, and grateful for the comprehensive and generous support from our community.
We believe that our children deserve a complete education beyond the basics. That’s why our all-volunteer Board works to support Discovery Labs curriculum in science, technology, research, engineering, arts, math (STREAM) and supplemental physical education by raising funds for the Solana Beach School District not provided by the State of California.
Discovery Labs inspire students to discover and explore these subjects through hands-on instruction. We also support other vital academic programs for the District.
We hope to continue this success throughout the 2015-2016 school year, which we can only do with your help. Donate today.
