The Belly Up opened in Solana Beach, California, in 1974 with only a couple of mics and no stage. Over the years it became a frequent stop for legends like John Lee Hooker, Etta James, and BB King. Epic performances by Curtis Mayfield, George Clinton, The Neville Brothers, and Toots and The Maytals also are a part of the club’s early legacy. Since then, many artists have stopped by on their way up the ladder, including No Doubt, Black Eyed Peas, Mumford and Sons, Childish Gambino, and many many more.
Major artists have done underplays at the venue in recent years, including The Killers, The Red Hot Chili Peppers (who also played the club for 200 people in 1985), Jimmy Buffet, Willie Nelson, Ben Harper, Damian Marley, and Tom Jones. And, perhaps most famously, the Rolling Stones played a private event here in 2015.
Voted San Diego's Best Live Venue. The internationally acclaimed Belly Up Tavern located in Solana Beach, has a long history of bringing great live music to the San Diego area.
WHO WE ARE
The 22nd District Agricultural Association manages and operates the Del Mar Fairgrounds on behalf of the State of California, and is governed by a nine-member board appointed by the governor. Fairgrounds operations are primarily funded by revenues generated by hosting events, the largest being the annual San Diego County Fair.
Making Memories Since 1936
Agriculture – the growth and farming of food, flowers & fiber – is what originally brought San Diegans together for the annual fair. By holding competitions to see who grew the sweetest citrus, who baked the tastiest pie, and who had the fastest horse, the San Diego County Fair was born in 1880.
Just after the turn of the century, in an effort to promote and encourage local farming and industry, the California legislature formally organized agricultural associations throughout the state, and the 22nd District Agricultural Association (22nd DAA) was established in San Diego.
In 1936, the 22nd DAA purchased the property at the mouth of the San Dieguito River, now known as the Del Mar Fairgrounds, to host the annual county fair. That first year, more than 50,000 guests attended the San Diego County Fair’s 10-day event. One year later the Del Mar Turf Club began leasing the racetrack for its annual live throughbred horse race meet, with the famous blue-eyed crooner Bing Crosby welcoming guests through the turnstiles.
Generations of San Diegans have made the annual fair and race meet part of their summer tradition. Today, the Del Mar Fairgrounds hosts a large variety of events across three distinct properties:
- Del Mar Fairgrounds • main campus and home to the administrative offices
- Surf & Turf Recreational Facilities & RV Park • just east of the Fairgrounds, across Jimmy Durante Blvd.
- Del Mar Horsepark Equestrian Center • located at Via de la Valle and El Camino Real
Events hosted at the Fairgrounds fall into two categories:
- Events produced by the 22nd DAA, the largest being the annual San Diego County Fair.
- Events and activities produced by third-party promoters, which range from concerts and festivals, trade shows and consumer expos, equestrian competitions and animal shows, sporting events, fundraisers and personal celebrations. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club is the largest tenant of the 22nd DAA, leasing on-site office space and operating two seasons of live thoroughbred horse racing.
Del Mar - Where the turf meets the surf!
Fiesta del Sol is a favorite tradition that kicks off the summer season in Solana Beach. Locals flock to this two-day annual event, which features delicious food, arts & crafts, shopping, beer and wine gardens, a kids’ area with games and rides and musical talent handpicked by the Belly Up Tavern. Add on easy parking and a newly expanded reach into the streets of Cedros Design District, and you’ve got a fun-filled party that offers something for everyone.
The 37th Anniversary Celebration of Fiesta del Sol happened May 21st and 22nd of 2016! With a brand new interactive website and the best performers of any Fiesta del Sol, 2016’s Fiesta del Sol was legendary! The Solana Beach Chamber of Commerce hosts this free 2-day Music & Crafts Event for the past 37 years as a kick-off to Summer in Solana Beach and give back to our amazing community! Once again, the Belly Up provided an exceptional lineup of musicians who performed over the two day event; which also includes our local community talent. In addition, we had over 200+ vendor booths, a fun and exciting Children’s Area set up for families to enjoy rides, games, and a climbing wall. Fiesta Del Sol, something for everyone!

Oh, how we missed you last year!
We just couldn’t let another summer come and go without celebrating San Diego and all of the wonderful food & agriculture, arts & talent, business & innovation, and all-around FUN of our community.
So while we’re still masked up and six-feet apart, we’re rolling up our sleeves and getting back to our roots for HOME*GROWN*FUN, presented by the San Diego County Fair.
Smaller in scale than the fair and limited in attendance, HOME*GROWN*FUN will offer a taste of your fair favorites–including shopping, food concessionaires, a Ferris wheel and carousel, agricultural-themed exhibits, demonstrations, contests and “edu-tainment” designed to educate and delight families looking to get outside for some real-life, in-person and down-home fun.
Let’s get growing again, San Diego!
